Once you get a grasp on what keywords actually are, you need to understand that no two keywords are created alike. Too often people think that because they start blogging they will rank in Google. They do a blog post on auto insurance, grilling techniques or whatever their related industry is about and get nowhere fast. This is because they were going after the wrong type of keyword.
A short tail keyword is a general topic. For example, in the insurance industry it would be like using “insurance,” “auto insurance” or “car insurance.” These keywords will attract many visitors, the good and the ones you don’t want to do business with.
A long tail keyword is a more precise term. Instead of using the term “insurance” we would say “insurance in Toledo, Ohio” or “discount car insurance for elderly drivers.” Because these keywords are more precise you will get exactly the people you are looking to attract to your website.
How Keywords affect SEO ranking
So now you have a basic understanding of what keywords are and how to identify them, but why does all this matter? Well when it comes to ranking in search engines, your key word strategy is one of the most important focuses. Here are three reasons why keywords are so important to ranking:
